View Full Version : Just Diagnosed... Softball?

Hi everyone.

I was just diagnosed with SB last week. I had my MRI today, and thus far have been given very little information.

I play on a softball team, and having never played team sports before IN MY LIFE - I found out that I REALLY LOVE SOFTBALL! I have finally figured out the game this year, and I am improving with every game, which makes every game that much more fun.

The thing is, I don't know if it is okay to play softball the way we do when I have SB (lol, no SB with SB?) I mean, I really enjoy the games, but is it something I should be doing? Can I slide if I have to? I haven't figured out sliding yet, but I was going to a couple of times here recently, and I chickened out, because I don't know if I should?

Anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Give it a try -- if it hurts, don't do it; if it doesn't hurt, slide away! If you were talking about playing tackle in football, that would be a different thing.

My advice is almost like Lisa's DON"T give up the things you love unless you have no choice. I have SB myleo and walk with crutches. I have taken more spills, crashes etc... than anyone should. I have never taken it easy and have yet to break myself. Believe me I have tried lol.

I've known I had Spina Bifida from day 1, but that never stopped me from playing sports. I used to be quite the little ruffian when I was little in fact. I played every sport that would let me get dirty. My mom taught me how to play baseball as soon as I was big enough to hold a bat. But unfortunately a lot of my sports playing days went down the toilet when i got my scoliosis rods put in. Then my school wouldn't let me play any more because of liability issues. But keep doing it until you can't any more I say.

Thanks to everyone for the advice! I was kind of thinking: I shouldn't let this slow me down...unless it actually slows me down of it's own volition, you know?

I still can't figure out what to make of the whole diagnosis. I know that my back hurts pretty badly, but I can usually deal with the pain with a little bit-o-vicodin. (I'm on a 30 day break right now, doctor's orders. So the pain is a bit more present and it gets in the way, but whatever.) I think that I should be able to wrap my brain around it a little better when I get results from my MRI next week.

THanks again to everyone. I shall keep on keepin' on. For as long as I can.

It's weird, because I have been given so little information, I just kept having this daydream where I go to slide into a base, and someone trips over me and I literally break in half! I know that won't happen, it just keeps replaying in my noggin.

Well, thanks again! Best wishes to all.

Go for it!! My son's neurosurgeon even okayed him to play football; even after spinal surgery.
