My son got a fever about 3 days ago of 101. He has had it ever since, we went to the pediatrician and he thinks is a uti because he doent seem to have the flu. We are giving him antibiotics but he is still sick. We dont really know if it is a uti because the tests take 3 days to come back. He is eating, but has thrown up a couple of times. He sleeps a lot, but that might be from the medicine. I am wondering what are the symptoms for a shunt malfunction. Because to me it seems like a shunt problem not a uti, because his last uti his fever went away in a day.

Have you given him tylenol? Usually, if I have a fever and the tylenol breaks it, it just means I am sick. If the tylenol doesn't do anything then a visit to the ER is in order. I am sick right now and had a 102 temp over the weekend. Tylenol brought it right down. I however, never get a temp with a shunt malfunction or UTI. Unless of course, the shunt is infected.

Could he be cutting teeth? My daughter always got a fever when her teeth were coming in. Just a thought.

Well just wanted to say that my doctor was totally wrong. It ended up being his shunt, I took him into the emergency room at childrens memorial, and they figured it out in about an hour( I love that place). He got his shunt revised but hes doing great now.

Quick note on this - my nuerosurgeon & urologist have both said that a uti can "junk up the shunt." It happened when my daughter was 3. The urologist said that the uti thickens all the fluids in the body & in turn stops up the shunt. Now we are careful to catch uti's early.
