Well...It started again this morning and isn't supposed to stop til Christmas Eve,it's is the first major snow storm of the season.Looking out my livingroom window I can't see the house across the road the snow's blowing so hard.
Three or four years ago I was out in a storm that was kinda like this one,I slipped and fell because I didn't notice the ice under the snow.I had a sharp pain from the fall in my right knee and couldn't straighten my leg and noticed a large lump beside the knee.I hollered and hollered for help as I lay on the snow covered sidewalk but nobody heard me,it was around 0 F (-20 C)out there and every body had there windows and doors shut.I looked at my leg and realized the lump beside my knee was actually my Kneecap,I thought I can't just lie here and freeze to death so I made a fist with my left hand and punched the side of my kneecap three times before it went back to where it was supposed to be,man did that hurt.I managed to get up and hobbled over to the house and got inside. When the storm subsided I took a cab and went to the emergency of the hospital where they x-rayed my leg and found no real damage other than stretched ligaments. They were amazed that I was able to relocate the kneecap though.I was prescribed something for pain and was told to take it easy for 6 weeks and sent on my way.I was also told that since I'd dislocated my kneecap it's more likely to happen again in the event of a fall, great!

I've since noticed my knee has never felt the same,it seems as though it wants to give at the most inopportune times.I now have cleats to strap to the bottom of my boots and have a brace type thing to strap around my knee and use a cleat bottomed cane in this type of weather.

Gawd I HATE winter....Right now I thinking of Dodger, basking in the height of summer eyeing those young ladies in their mini skirts, you lucky person you!

Well it's time to put on all my gear and get outside and start shoveling,I imagine I'll be doing this a few times today and then tomorrow my eldest sister and I will be going to my Mom's to shovel her out.

To those of you here that live in a place where there's no snow all I can say to you is....Lucky Devils!

End of Rant

Sometimes I fantasize about snow and then I read something like what you wrote and realize that snow is best for visiting and not living in! It is 67 degrees F today in Nashville. But it has been in the 30s & 40s and we had snow last week. It is supposed to be down in the teens for a low on Sunday with a chance for snow. But realize that "snow" here means half a dozen flakes in the air and everyone rushes to the grocery store to buy bread & milk! I kid you not, the merest hint of a possiblity of snow and the grocery store shelves are bare and school is canceled!

Oh Lisa I used to live about 4 hours south of you in mississippi and I really really really miss the winters there. Now i live up in the great lakes region and it SUCKS!!!! I just got to the office (late today so i could get my feet warm after taking the kids to school this morning) and i now know what it would feel like to walk thorugh a giant slush puppie!!! It was snowing really hard this morning when i was driving the kids to school. I think we had about 4 inches of accumulation in the hour i was one the road. When i came to work it had all turned to rain and the biggest mess you ever saw.

Gimp I fall all the time on this stuff even with the ice tips on the bottom of my crutches. I think every day this week i have hit the ground at least once lol. Lucky for me i havent' broken anything. I either have the best luck or the strongest bones in the world because i have taken some spills in my life that should have broken me all up. I will keep my fingers crossed that my luck still holds out.

I have to say Dodger i am jelious as well. Just the thought of summertime almost brings a tear to my eye! We have cold and crappy weather from October till May every year!!!!

Our crappy weather runs from may to October! So it all evens out! It's been around 40C (approx 100F) every day here for the last couple of weeks but this evening we had a little thundershower - it cooled the air down quite a bit - glorious! but it won't last - the heat will be back in the morning.

As for snow - here 6 inches of snow means the flakes are lying on the ground six inches apart! LOL! (I'll see if I can find a good photo)
Our winter daytime temperatures almost never stay below freezing. Snow never survives for more than 24 hours on the ground - except up on mountains. Then entire country has exactly ONE ski resort and winter sports means the rugby season has started.

We just had a wonderful snow here in Louisiana. It was the first I had seen in my life. (I posted some pictures) Gabi was so excited until she tried to roll around in her wheelchair. She could barely go and her hands, even in gloves, were freezing. She said "Mom, this is like a miracle and a nightmare all at the same time."

Well we got a reprieve with the blizzard it stopped after supper,Yippee...
but it's supposed to return Sunday.
The whole city basically shut down today,we have a little taller than a waist high drift out front and the plows haven't been down our street yet.I went for a walk and in some places it was thigh high (I'm 5'6").I shoveled off the wheelchair ramp and a path to the road in case the house burns down and I have to get the wife out quick, man was I pooped when done. After my after supper nap I noticed a brigade of neighbours were doing the rest of the driveway,Double Yippee...I guess it pays off giving them free veggies out of the garden when we have a bumper crop as we did last season.Yep my neighbours are super cool!

We'll wait and see what ol' man winter brings in the next couple days, nuthin I hope!

Hey Cutie, were you like me today and in a tank top? Crazy freaking Louisiana weather. We go from snow last week to tank tops and shorts today. I just hope it gets a little colder before Christmas. My mom bought me winter jammies to wear on Christmas and I'd like to actually get to wear them! lol

LOL Dahlia. I was wearing a tank top yesterday while playing outside with my children.

Yes Lisa,a snow blower sounds like a mighty fine Idea right about now.I woke up to another 5 inches,it's supposed to be sunny today, but it's been snowing all morning,sigh....I've been out there since before 9am. shoveling our property and helping those who helped me out yesterday. It's rather interesting though,as neighbours we all basically keep to ourselves but at times such as this we all seem to band together and help each other and that's a really good thing!

Cutie P. & Dahli...Tank tops and shorts eh!We won't be seeing any of that til late May or early June. The coldest months here are end of January to mid February where the thermometer can fall to -20 F (-28 C) and lower and even lower still if you factor in the wind chill.I remember the other winter walking home in -38C,by the time I got home my joints were really stiff and couldn't feel my nose.If you spit it would freeze before hitting the ground.

Hmmmm,it looks as though the sun's trying to come out!

My husband usually does the snow blowing and he and my son do the shoveling. My son has SBO as well so after shoveling at home I couldn't make him sovel the office to. We had a foot of snow in one night and after doing all that work at home I couldn't have him do it at the office to because his feet were frozen and he back hurt. I had to work that same day and my office is about a block away from my home. I had to walk through all that snow down the sidewalk to get from my truck to the office (we are responsible for our own sidewalks) to get to the door and i did. I used my crutch to dig out as much as i could from the front door so i could open it. Well My husband was frozen from the snow blowing and i wanted to see if i could do the shoveling at my office. I got my chair that i use there and the snowshovel and started shoveling my way out the door and down the wheelchair ramp. My building isn't very wide so i figured hell i would just do it all. The funny thing is i guess it is unusual to see someone sitting in a wheelchair shoveling snow because i looked up at traffic passing by and some woman had her camera out and was taking pictures of me shoveling the snow. I thought that was a little wierd lol. I will tell you by the time i got all that done I had muscles that ached i didn't know i had!! I liked the experience though not only was it cool to know that i can handle it all myself (which i guess i knew i could but never actually done it before this) but now there are absolutly no worries when my husband is out of town.
I have a huge 4 wheel drive truck with the biggest mud tires my husband could find on it so it will cut through the snow when i am driving. It is so funny because when i am standing outside the truck (when trying to get in) the floor comes to my chest!!! I have to litterally climb into it and you should hear the comments i get lol. I can't believe such a little gal drives such a big huge vehicle!! My husband said he felt that i was safer in it because of the 4 wheel drive.

Actually Angel we too are responsible for our sidewalks. We must have our walkway's shoveled 24 hours after a snowfall. If it's not done and someone phones in a complaint the city workers will come and do it and then the city adds a $200.00 charge to your house taxes.Elderly and disabled people aren't exempt but can apply to the John Howard society to have the shoveling done for them.
I would rather do the shoveling myself as I consider it exercise and actually don't mind. There's an old saying "If you snooze you loose",I feel if I don't get up and do,I'll get weaker and not be able to do in the future.

From reading your above post I get the feeling you sort of have the same attitude too Angel and are teaching your son the same.

You are right i do feel the same way. I don't get to much exercise in the winter time and i don't mind doing it myself either. My husband does do it when he is at the office but there are those times that it falls on me. No worries now that i know i can do it. I always do whatever i can for myself because i know that if i don't i will loose the ability to do so.

Snow whats that. I cant actualy remember the last time we had more than about 4mm of the stuff here. At the moment its just wet or windy. Or both.

When do we get to see some photos of proper snow then? I personaly would love to experiance a proper snowy christmas. Over here if we get more than about 5mms the entire country goes into panic mode and shuts down.

Well I had looked out my window before bed at 12:30am Tuesday night and it was blizzarding out there.I got up yesterday to see another 2 feet of snow on the ground, sigh :-( .Got the sidewalk and driveway shoveled out by noon and have had an aching left shoulder ever since but not too achy to hoist up a glass of brandy with the wife to bring in the new year at midnight. This getting old and snow definitely don't mix,I wish I lived in a warmer climate.

"White Crap" LOL, I call it something close to that!

This is our first year living in it and it is really difficult with a chair. That 'crap' gets the tires all muddy which in turn gets Carters jacket all muddy which then rubs on everything else. And that is IF he can even manuever the darn chair on all the ice.

I am seriously thinking that if my DH really wants to live forever in CO then we are going to rip up the driveway and put heated coils under it.

Barb,You forgot to mention the guck that the chair drags onto the floor of inside the house.I lay on 3 or 4 coats of industrial polyurethane wax on the linoleum floors every late October and have to put on a few more coats in about December and then strip the floors in March and reapply the wax.The snow my wife drags in with her wheelchair is usually mixed with salt from the road and really does a number on the floors if you don't keep one step ahead of the game.
Theresa,we used to go tobogganing a lot when Younger but at this age (52) and all the surgical steel in me,I worry they may have to pick me up in bits from the bottom of the hill.

Winter is for the young and energetic not for the old and overly cautious lol

Good thing I got out on the bike yesterday to do the banking and getting the bills paid, picked up a few groceries as well.I may go out a little later to see how much ice I can chip off the wheelchair ramp, heaven forbid if the wife can't get to the bingo hall tonight lol.

Gimp you must life somewhere in the northeast because we got the same thing!!! The snow is one thing but this ice sucks!!! My husband walked me to my truck this morning to come to the office because our drive way is a solid sheet of ice and he was afraid i would fall and do some real damage to myself. I wasn't so much worried about that as i was slipping and not being able to get up. You know kind of like a deer on a frozen pond. I have done that before and was just totally helpless until he picked me up (this happened last winter in a parking lot at the mall no less)

As for the sleeves this is the first winter i have ever used my wheelchair outside. I guess not having done it before i didn't have the forethought to think about my coat getting dirty. I guess you live and learn. Any wheelchair tips would be greatly appreciated. I am using mine more to save my sholders some pain. I don't want to loose the ability to walk so i have to lay off my sholders half the time so they don't completly give out. I have learned that wheels don't really get good traction on ice. My husband joked about getting some chains for them lol. I have also learned that not all curb cuts are created equal. I went flying down a sidewalk in my chair and to cross the street. I thought it would be a smooth ride i mean you have the curb cut. WRONG i hit that thing and flew into the middle of the street (the wheelchair close behind) and my chair landed on top of me. Scared the POO out of everyone close enough to see. i wasn't hurt just made a mental note to myself to slow the hell down lol.

Get those strap on cleat things for your shoes/boots for when in your chair too,if your sliding just put down your cleated feet and you will stop.(I got one for the wife and it works well. This may seem silly but in snow go backwards, having the back wheel go through the snow first is alot easier than the other way around plus you can push with your feet.Front airless tyres are tons better than air filled ones, not so with the back.Tyre pressure, air pressure drops with colder weather and so it will with your tyres so keeping the rear tyres pumped up to the proper psi is a bit more of a chore but you'll move easier if they're pumped up properly.

Thanks for the tips. I have a wheelchair that is lifted pretty high as i have very long arms. My feet don't touch the ground but i will try the back tires and if nothing else i will jump out of the chair and push it that way. I don't have air tires i have the other kind. I didn't know which ones to get so i got the ones i had on my previous wheelchair. Are the air filled tires better?

Only if fixing punctures is your idea of fun. :sign0020:
I havn't had air tyres since the mid 1980's - my current lot are one-piece moulded polyurethane rubber. Zero maintenance and ridiculously easy to replace when they eventually wear out (2-3 years).

Gymp
01-08-2009, 12:46 AM
Firstly,I'm not trying to be disrespectful to you Dodger in any way!

Yes,polyurethane tires are no maintenance.Fixing a flat is not a big deal either and if you watch where you ride you may not get one.
I have a friend who uses a wheelchair full time (for 30 yrs at least). He tells me pneumatic (air filled) tyres ride much better through slop (slush, snow and sand) provided that air pressure is maintained to the proper psi.He also tells me it's alot more of a comfortable ride.

We Had that conversation about a month ago and I'm about to switch the wife's chair over to them and give it a whirl.

Dodger,I do have a question for you about polyurethane tyres...How in the hell do you get them suckers off,you say it's easy ???? I want to keep these tyres as spares so I won't be pulling out the hack saw.Ive tried to roll them off the rim to no avail. No room to prop something between tyre and rim to pry off .Even after heating them up a bit with a blow dryer they just don't want to move,I'm stumped, what's the secret?

Angel, you'll definetly find going backwards through snow alot easier!

It does occasionally snow here in middle Tennessee (more in the Smokies east of here), but just like there, Ollie, it doesn't stick around long. But your mention of photos made me laugh. Since it doesn't snow much or stick around long here, everyone gets out and takes tons of pictures. Our university archive has photos of the campus going back to 1911 when we were founded, and to look at them (whether in the 1920s or the 1990s), you would think it snowed all the time here. But the opposite is true -- it snows very little, so the amount of "snow" pictures is in inverse proportion b/c it is a novelty!

The trouble with punctures is that they will always happen at the most inconvenient time possible - like on the way to an important meeting. fixing punctures is not hard to do - my issue is the time it takes!
If you live where I do a punture is pretty much guaranteed to happen at least once every few weeks.

My tyres are actually quite easy to remove by applying a bit of brute force. (I have very strong hands - my grip force has been measured at well over 100 pounds) but I just cut them off with a utility knife when they are worn out.

BTW they are "Krypton" brand 24" x 1-3/8" in a grey PU rubber that has a slightly yellowish tinge. Made in China of course!!!

I find that Carters chair with the air tires have much better traction on the snow/ice.

But I agree with Dodger that PU tires are a million times better for everyday use.

Great day skiing yesterday. A professional ski team from the UK was up there and all of their chairs had these tires. One of the ladies stopped and talked with me about where to get them and all and let me take a picture of the tires to show you all.

I have to say yet again how amazing the National Sports Center for the Disabled is in Winter Park, CO. It was so NORMAL to have skiiers with one leg, people in sit-skis, blind skiiers. It is just so wonderful that the non disabled people don't even blink at all the differently abled athletes up there. It is the sort of environment I wish we all lived in all the time.

Oky excuse me if im being totaly and utterly dumb and stating the obvious here. Those look all the world like the tyres people put on mountain bikes or smaller versions of the tyres for off road motor bikes.

I will freely admit to being pretty clueless on these things. Are they the same as you would put on a pushbike? Im pretty sure you can get solid tyres for a pushbike although what they would be like to ride i cannot imagine. You would feel every little bump im sure. Is that the same in a wheelchair? Do you feel every bump and dip in the ground with them having solid wheels? Please excuse me if that seems silly. I will admit i have never actualy tried being in wheelchair so to speek, my partner doesnt think she would get hers back in one piece if she did let me.

Gymp
01-12-2009, 06:21 PM
Ollie, yea they do look alot like knobby BMX or MTB bike tyres.I would think that as long as the wheel width and height matched those of the tyres there would be no reason you couldn't use them.I do know of people who have used bike tyres on their chairsAlthough really fat tyres like Big Hanks would interfere with the chair sides.I've ridden around in my wife's chair with the solid tryes and yes it is does make for a bumpier ride,(I ride a bike quite often).

I would imagine the tyres shown above could even have kevlar belts in them and thicker sidewalls to further puncture resistance. It looks as though these people take their chairs where most wouldn't,good on them.

Thanks for the pics Barb!

Hooray for the south! We live near Charleston, SC, and have not seen snow or ice since 2002! That's just one of the reasons we live here. We are having record and near record low temps right now, though, with daytime highs of just 50 (deg. F), and lows in the !20s! with teens expected on Friday. We locals won't know how to dress, and the Yankee transplants will make fun of us! ;) Most of us believe it doesn't snow here because we can't drive in it!

Cimko zoom lenses that I bought in the 1970's or early 80's.I miss that camera.I had a tripod and cable release and a range doubler it was great for time lapse photos,sunset/rise photos. The range doubler came in great for taking shots of wildlife at great distances.Alas that baby died and a few years later I took it in to get it fixed and they wanted $200 just to open it up and have a look see.So I ended up buying my first Digital camera,an H.P.370 one of those pocket cameras.Worst camera in the world and I recommend it to nobody,it's a crappy P.O.S. that cost $300 at the time.I was actually just 4 inches away from the screen when I took the pics this morning.I'm starting to think about purchasing a Olympus DSLR,I like the look of those cameras and I may be able to use the old lenses as well.

Also look at the Canon D400, it's a very good mid-range SLR with a full set of features and a wide variety of accessories.
There are 3 of them in my family. (It makes it more economical by sharing accessories.)

Dodger, are Canon's still proprietary? If I remember correctly their non digital SLR's were proprietary requiring you use their lenses only,Nikon was like that too.

Thanks
Gymp.

You can still use Olympus lenses on digital bodies.

Canon cameras it depeneds on the body and the lens, it gets very complicated. There is a list on the Canon website aparently of what is compatible with what.

I personaly use a Nikon D50 at the moment which is getting on a bit and i am looking at replacing it with a D200. For film i still have an old Olympus OM10 which has been in the family for 30ish years now. I also have a Nikon F5 film camera which i use occasionaly.

Thanks Ollie! It's good to hear of a person still using film.I guess I'll be doing some hunting,I really want to use those bayonet mount Cimko zoom lenses and range doubler with a digital slr

I have to admit i dont use film to much now as my stock of film is running rather low and it has got very expensive. Developing costs here are high as well. I used to have a freind with a dark room who would develop for me for a contribution towards his costs but weve lost contact.

Your best bet would be to find either a freindly shop that would let you try your lenses on a body or someone who owns one.

Ollie,I forgot to mention,You've got quite a nice little collection of cameras.I tried clicking on your "overthefencephotography"link and was taken to" Address not found" is the site down?
I was really into photography for many years,my Dad gave me my first,an old "Brownie"when I was a kid. When my Minolta bit the dust,I sorta left taking pictures alone until I bought that HP-370.I figured I'd use it for just clicking on anything to give me ideas for art projects but was really disappointed with it,it doesn't meter properly and it don't have aperture priority, truly a piece of junk.I guess I'll be hunting around for that DSLR soon, the prices sure have come down somewhat.

Thank you. Of all of them my favourite is the OM10 but i just cant get good film for it so i dont use it alot.

My website is down at the moment for several reasons. Id let the account payments slip and then cancelled them as i was tight for money and i also needed to revamp the entire site which is slowly happening. I will give you a shout when it is back online if you are interested.

Feel free to drop me a line, i would love to talk photography and cameras more. I dont know many other people with the same interest and it is always nice to share ideas etc. I have looked at your art in the gallery and i realy like it, i wish i had the skill for it. My mum paints in watercolours and does a bit of photography and my dad was a technical drawing artist. I guess my art is my photography rather than drawing.

There is so many SLRs on the market now that theres guaranteed to be one within your price bracket. Personaly speeking i would only touch the Canons, Nikons or Olympus but thats just me. Sony are nice but are to full of useless gadgets for me. My top choice would be Nikon but thats just a personal preferance.

If there is an interest i would be happy to post some of my photos on the gallery here, be warned there will be a few photos of aeroplanes as that is my first love but i will try and make sure there is more than just aeroplanes.

Hey, Ollie --- what'd you think of that fancy bit of flying that took place in NYC on Thursday?

There's a lot of noise being made about how "heroic" the pilot is, but that is a load of rubbish, he simply followed standard procedure - did the job he's paid to do, no more, no less.

He just got lucky to have a nice flat piece of water to land in, the plane was flying slow enough not to break up on impact and fast enough to be controlable, and that it was right in a major city with rescuers litteraly seconds away.
If it had happend anywhere else (even a few seconds earlier or later) the headlines would be about a tragedy.

Agreed totaly with Dodger. The press always makee a huge thing of it when most of it is just putting training into practise and luck. I personaly wont believe anything the media reports untill i have seen the FAAs accident report.

Off topic:
Has anyone seen the classic airliner in the background of some of the photos? Im talking about the Concorde. Now that was a lovely design.

Well...Back to the snow... It's been snowing constantly since last Friday and I'm up to my waist in it.We've got so much of it this year they've started to load it onto trucks and are hauling it away.I've shoveled every day since last Friday,I get up this morning, look outside and realize I've got to go out yet again. When's it gonna end!

I really feel sorry for the Homeless,we've had 3 consecutive "Cold Day Alerts" (when the temps fall below -15) and there's no let up in sight til next Friday. The hostel beds are all filled up and I'll bet a few of the homeless will have died by the time this is over.Since the economic downturn we've got a record number of homeless people and many more using the foodbanks but they're running low.I've been contributing to that and putting a few tins of food in the receptacles outside of our Grocery stores when I shop.

I haven't seen a winter like this in a long while and can't wait til spring.

For the last few days we've had a reprieve from winter.Since Tuesday the temperature has gone up to 11deg.C and stayed there til yesterday, now back to around 0 deg.C.All the snows melted to boot. The temps are supposed to stay around zero C. and Sunny til around next Monday,
OOOOWWWWEEEE....

Half the back yard is under water from the quick thaw but that's okay because it's the back half of the yard and there's no risk of water getting into the basement. It sure is odd looking out the window and not seeing any snow.
