Does anybody have any info on sb being associated with preterm labour? My doctor says that I am at higher risk but I cant find any facts to back her up.

I don't know about preterm labor being associated with Spina Bifida. I was born two weeks early, but I was considered to be full term when I was born.

I was never told once that i might go into preterm labor. I was told that if things got bad they would take her out early. She ended up coming out on the 37th week which is considered full term.

The doctor basically said that babies that have things wrong with them tend to be premmies. Now i am thinking she was trying to scare me so that if i did feel like i was going into labour i was in the correct place.

Doctors generally don't like it when labour intereferes with their golf, cocktail parties, shopping, skiing trips, etc...

I have done a bit of research and found out that a small number of babies are preterm. out of those babies over half have some type of congential defect. the doctors made it sound as though a majority of sb babies or at least a decent percentage are preterm. from what i have researched the percentage is still small but maybe bigger then somebody having an average baby. all the same i am taking precautions to prevent it from happening. just in case.

And that's all you can do really - just take good care of yourself and stop worrying about things you cannot control.
A stressed out mother is not good for the baby.

I was a week late because of not wanting to come out....literally. They had to push on my mom's stomach to get me out because of the sb. I was a big baby too at 8lbs 7oz.

My sister was a week late, my elder brother was 4 days late and I was 2 days late.
My younger brother was the only one who got the schedule right.
If my parents had another baby he/she might have managed to arrive early, but they decided that four of us was plenty.

My son was born 3 weeks early. I don't think it had to do with his SBO. What it had to do with is due to my SB Myleo i am very very short. 4 feet tall (although i have the arms of someone that would have been 5' 10") and i simply ran out of room. The child had absolutly no where else to go but OUT!! He was fine as far as development and wasn't concidered pre mature just pre term. I now know that i only have enough room for a 5lb 15oz and 19inch long baby.

I got curious about this and did a little research (I've just read abstracts, not full articles). It is true that infants with birth defects on average tend to come early, but it varies with severity -- in other words, an infant with trisomy 13 or anencephaly would be much more likely to come early than an infant with sb.
But here's what was really interesting. I found a study done 2 years ago -- it was a survey of 1000 Ob/Gyns in the US to determine how much they know about sb, since they are the ones who usually counsel expectant parents about termination. Among other things, TWO THIRDS of them overestimated the incidence of pre-term birth. Two thirds also overestimated the incidence of mental retardation in people with sb. One third overestimated the incidence of stillbirth and neonatal death.
I haven't read the whole article yet; once I've finished end of term grading, hopefully I'll have time to read the whole thing and report back. This article is not available free, so I can't post a link, but I will post the citation (it's at the office and I'm at home). I think I'll start a new thread called "Medical Pessimism About SB"!

well i have been to two phychics and they both say that my baby is growing too slowly and they will give me an early c section in january! Thats a month early. I dont know if anybody else believes in stuff like that but i do. At least it has put my mind at rest and i have stopped obessessing with going into labour! I figure whats going to happen will happen and i might as well enjoy myself until it does.
