My daughter has had a MACE for a few years now and more times than I can count, after she has injected her solution of glycerol and saline the procedure has not worked and she ends up vomiting and in terrible distress. She injects 30 ml of saline more to help things along and ultimately it begins to work but with much misery. She almost passes out from the stress of it all and then when it has finished she lies in bed and shakes with shock. Like an accident victim. Is this normal? I mean does this happen to other kids? The hospital says do it more often, or sometimes it doesnt always work....yes but why does she have to suffer so??????

My daughter has had her since 2003. We use only tap water and about 1000 cc's of it. We have never had any trouble like that. I will every now and again use a little castillesoap to help clean her completely out.
But never used any glycerol or saline. May be her body is absorbing to much sodium from the saline.

Really? You only use tap water? Not glycerol or saline? That stuff costs me a fortune. And yes I always wondered what damage it was doing to her body. Doesnt everybody else use glycerol and saline. @25 ml of glycerol and 75ml of saline this is the normal procedure and most times it works ok, but I still cant believe....just water????
C has a cecostomy which is sort of the same thing and we only use tap water. Body temp tap water seems to work best. We have tried all the other concoctions too and found plain old tap water works best. We talked about some other mixtures for this here: Cecostomy mixes (http://spinabifidaconnection.com/showthread.php?t=18&highlight=cecostomy)

The only time I have had this happen is when I use an enema. I just use about 5,000ccs of sodium chloride and usually do it on saturday and tuesday. However, I never shake after I get sick.

My daughter has a cecostomy. I use 800mls of saline. I make my own saline.
This month we have discovered it is not working. She had impacted bowels twice last month. That is how we found out she has SB.

what type of doctor does this MACE procedure?
Either a general surgeon or urologist. My ped urologist did mine the first time, before the general surgeon learned how to do it and fixed what he screwed up.
my son does bowel washouts, but with warm tap water, and there has never been any discomforts, but I guess its not quite the same as a mace, but the water ends up in the same place so I GUESS that warm water would be best. hugs to your child
