So we have Early Intervention services through the county, right? They come about once a month for PT and once every 3 months to check him for OT needs, and will come more frequently for OT if needed, and ST comes once every 3 months or so too. Today, the OT was here with the "teacher", and they delivered the quarterly report on how he's doing, what to look for over the next few months, etc... He's doing really well, considering the surgery he's still recovering from (wow is it really almost a month ago???) Anyway, one thing the teacher told me was to use two word phrases with him so he can understand/repeat them easier. Ummm, no? I speak to my children in a normal way, so they don't have to break bad speech habits when they're older! My daughter (3) is CONSTANTLY complemented on her vocabulary and easily understood speech. And their OWN REPORT from before he turned 1 said that his communication skills were appropriate for a 15-18 mo old! :scream: Spina bifida is NOT an intellectual disability, and they should KNOW that by now! :scream: Their own report said he was advanced for his age in communication (he's got like 10 words already that he uses appropriately! He's ahead of where Jennifer was at 14 months!)

:scream::scream::scream:

Don't let them frustrate you! You are the mother you know your child better than anyone else! It is fine to listen to the "experts", and sometimes i use that term loosly, but it is up to YOU to teach your child because you know where they are at. I wouldn't set him back keep going the way you are it is obvious you are on the right track.
I can't tell you how many times that had i listened to those who were supposed to know more than me I would have stalled my son's development. Not mentally but physically. I went with what I thought was best and it has paid off. Keep up the good work!

The "experts" pretty much quote what they have learned or dealt with. It has been known to be quite common to have a speech delay d/t working extra hard on the physical challenges with SB. My dd was delayed in speech. So you know your child best, and they are just trying to cover all bases. So don't take it personally when they suggest something you probably don't need. You decide what info might help or not.
