I'm a grandmother of 2 soon to be 3, the oldest one with sb, L3-L4. Dylan will be 8 years old in June. I love my daughter but when it comes to her son she's over protective. She has been hoping that Dylan will be able to tell her when he has to go to the bath room. There has been times when he says something and has hit it but then there are times he don't know. He's in the First Grade this year. She has not done any bladder or bowel training. I keep telling her it's going to come to a time where Dylan won't want some changing his diapers all the time. What kind of option is there out there for him. She hasn't taken to a clinic for over 4 years now. I just need some advise.
Thanks
Barb
my son is 9 years old and is in grade 3, and he was born with spina bifida. most children with sb have bowel and bladder problems. It just needs a lot of patience in time solutions will be found, either medication, catherization, or operations.

Hi,
I'm a mother of a son with sb. He is 6 years old. He takes ditropan to keep him dry in the front and then we use a cone enema to keep the back end cleaned out. We just started this program about 3 weeks ago. So far he has had no accidents. It would be great if she could go back to clinic. Sam caths himself every 3-4 hours. He still needs someone with him, but he is becoming more and more independant. Hope that help.s

Welcome. My 9 year old had a cecostomy (http://www.cecostomy.com/) 4 years ago that helps immensely with bowel continence. I'm a grandmother of 2 soon to be 3, the oldest one with sb, L3-L4. Thank you for your answer. How often do you use the cone enema during the day? Dylan used to be on ditropan but again my daughter didn't want to use it because if it stop him and found out later that he could have on his own. I think she's thinking if she does this to him that later down the road found out he could on his own he would be mad at her for doing this to him.

It is becoming a fairly mainstream thing now I hear.

I've just come back to this thread again and a light came on - a huge red warning light!
What your daughter is doing to her son could possibly amount to criminal neglect.
By denying him the medical care and treatment he needs she is exposing herself to possible prosecution. If someone complains about it to the social services authorities she could lose him.
She simply MUST pull her head out of the sand and face up to her parental responsibilities. I don't know if threatening her with this might have a positive effect on her behaviour - but either way the interests of her son always must come first.
