For anybody that's interested I got a few statistics off Caitlin's neurosurgeon at our last appointment, thought i'd share them incase anybody is interested.
So, he said that regarding hydrocephalus, 50% fail within the first year. When it fails, there is a even higher chance that it will happen again. If it fails three times before the child reaches 6months then it is extremely likely that it will fail again. (Really crap news for the likes of my daughter who's shunt has failed twice and she's only 5months.) However, I remember Summer saying that hers failed three times before she was 6months and then she was fine for years after that so that gives me some hope!
1 in 4 children who have hydrocephalus also develop epilepsy.
It is more common for children to develop ADHD and ADD when they have hydrocephalus. But, symptoms would be appearing even in a 4month old baby if they had these conditions and these symptoms would be if the baby cried quite alot, if they seemed agitated all the time, and if they didn't interact with you and avoided eye contact with you.
Less than 1 in 4 children who have the Chiari malformation ever have any problems with it in their lifetime.
Sorry if I depressed anybody with that but I know some people (like myself) want to know all the statistics so thought id share what I found out :)
