We just rec'd our first pair of Hatchbacks.. and our first pair of girlie shoes for Analise (age 4.5). I know there's been posts about shoes so I thought I would share....

And I have to say.. we love these! They are a little pricey @ $55.00 but I think they're worth it.

Oh, Analise looks very happy with her new "girlie" shoes.
We haven't bought Makenna any shoes yet, her feet are pretty tiny still. She is getting fitted for her first AFO'S this thursday, so we thought we would get her some tennis shoes. Is there anything special that we need to look for when we pick out shoes?

I love the shoes and hope one day to be able to buy some for my Madison! She is still in the shoes with bar for her club feet but her feet are improving and we are so thankful.

Erin just got a new pair of school shoes but they are a very boring black!! We really struggle with shoes which is a shame as she has a massive shoe fetish. We often find her in the hall cupboard putting all the other girls shoes on her hands!!!

Hi,

Analise looks so cute in her new shoes!! YAY!

I spend most of my time in sneakers/gym shoes, because they are deep, and have good laces, they also usually have a removable inner sole, so if they are not deep enough to keep the AFO ankle in and fit the toes in, then you can take the inner sole out. I don't normally need to do this, but I do remember once or twice it has been useful to do so.

Wearing 'girly' shoes - I have never really worn any, except for at my two school formals/proms - at age nearly 16 and then nearly 18 - I don't remember what the shoes I wore for my first one looked like, but the second one, we bought some nice black suede shoes, with a tiny heel, and no buckle or anything on the top, so Mum had to make some little elastic straps that went under the sole of the shoe, right where the heel began, and up around my foot, so it looked like the shoe was designed with a buckle/strap, like some school shoes are, and some 'dress' shoes are.

If AFO's are involved, they need to be deep shoes so that the AFO and the toes fit nicely in the shoe without being too tight, and also have a high-ish back so the AFO doesn't slip out. I have only ever really worn lace-ups, since they seem to be the easiest to get over the AFO's. I look longingly at all the high heels and dressy in the shops. Apparently some orthotists are willing to make AFO's to go inside high heels, I have been told it can be done, but it's not really worth it if I am not going to wear them very often and also if they might not work or might hurt my ankles/legs.

Hope this helps.

I have posted here before about my frustrations of trying to find shoes to fit over the AFO's. I was so frustrated with the orthosist who made it sound like it was no big deal to find shoes to fit over. I called her from my cell after the third store and she offered to put nonskid sole onto the AFO. Sarah still slipped alot with that. I ended up using the leather booties over the AFO's until she needed outdoor wear. I did find a list of special shoe makers for AFO's. I never did resort to buying them, as I eventually found some to fit over them. Sarah doesn't need her braces anymore, but her foot arch is so high she doesn't fit into many regular shoes. I buy her these little leather maryjanes that squeak.
They have a wide width and a larger toebox. (Squeaker shoes) just google it there's many sites that carry them.

Here's the link to the specialty shoes list.
