Hey everyone! So Lylas shunt surgery was cancelled! We went and had a scan done of her head before her scheduled surgery and when her doctor came in he measured her head and its still the same as last week it had not increased, he then went over her scan and said he didnt want to do the surgery anymore. Her head (soft spot) feels great and the scan is the same.
As you can imagine my heart hit the floor along with my jaw! lol He also asked if she was showing any signs or acting differently to which I said no.
He should me the scan and explained his reason like this: If Lyla already had a shunt and they saw that amount of fluid they would be happy. So instead of doing something unneccesarily he wants to just moniter her closely. She goes back in another two weeks. Its more likely then not that she will still need it but he would rather she be a little older and stronger anyways! So I absolutely love her doctors, they are so on top of things they dont wanna do the surgery unless they have to but at the same time they wont allow it to get severe. So it turned out to be a great day :26aa:

Great! Also good that they're keeping a close watch on it in case the current stable condition is just temporary.
In my case it completely dissapeared a few weeks after birth but they kept checking for months. I'll ask my parents if they can remember when the docs decided I was no longer at risk.

Well, that would be wonderful if she was fortunate enough to not need the shunt. It's good to prepare for the worse and hope for the best. My daughter was actually very similar. They kept her in the NICU for 14 days monitoring her hydro. The NS said it was "borderline" and didn't want to do the shunt surgery unless it was absolutely necessary. We went for many MRIs and cranial ultrasounds and finally at 3 months of age the shunt was necessary. We'll be praying that Lyla doesn't need one!

Smoop how did she handle the recovery at 3 months? She went quite some time without needing it, but we know how that goes anything can change. And how has she done with the shunt? Has she needed many additional surgeries (revisions or what not).

The shunt surgery was a breeze! She was out of the hospital in 24 hours and I couldn't believe how quickly she recovered. She was happy and her usual self the day after surgery. I think I gave her pain reliever only once. And she has had absolutely no problems with her shunt and she's now 4.5 years old. Thank God for that!

Ana has had only 2 surgeries: back closure & shunt.

Sarah drs told me that at 18mos she was pretty much out of the woods, for needing a shunt. So no shunt so far, and she is 2yrs. 5mos. no symptoms with Chiarii either, no symptoms from syrinx. :sign0021::sign0021:

Woohoo, Go Lyla!!! Hope she continues to be in such good shape that she doesn't need a shunt. it is something big to go through, and Dr's definitely shouldn't put a child through it until absolutely sure it's necessary. :sign0021:
