Hello,

just wanted to share and find support! Erick - 17mo. old son is having an MRI on the 14th, it will be his 3rd mri checking for pressure in his brain and amount of liquid. No shunt, uro is monotoring his head size and liquid, because even though the amount of water is significant, Erick does not show singhs that it is affecting him. I worry because he goes under general anesthesia and wonder if too many mri's will be ok.

Has anyone experienced this? any thoughts will be appreciated.

Thank you!

My daughter has had several MRIs. Her NS actually preferred them over CT scans. She wasn't shunted until she was 3 months of age and in those first few months of life she underwent several MRIs to monitor the hydro. In addition, after her non-programmable shunt was placed the doctor was closely monitoring how the shunt was working so we went through a few more MRIs. Each time she was put under anesthesia. That was very hard for me so I can understand your concern.

She hasn't had any scans for about 2 years. Our new NS prefers CT scans but will only do them if there's a suspected problem.

I can understand the caution about CT scans, given the recent news about how huge the variations are in the amount of radiation and how it is often a lot more than previously reported. Since at that age they have to be anesthetized with either one, might as well use the safer (albeit more expensive) modality.

Does your NS not offer Haste MRIs? Mackenzie is going in for her 2nd one tomorrow. No anesthesia and scanned in under a minute...our NS loves them but then again he was the one to bring it to Tucson.
