Hello from Croatia,
my son Petar is 4,5 y, sb, hydrocephalus, he has his VP shunt when he was 1y and 3 months. Wright now he is in hospital, third day after his shunt was removed (gulp!), because of various simptoms during last two or three years. NS said he is going to take it out and wait for few day to see what is happening, before he is going to implant a new one. NS just not bothered to say WHY he decided to wait, Petar is not monitored from the iinside (CSF monitoring), and I don't know how many hours or days we have to wait untill it's save to conclude he no longer need shunt. Here you have to grab a dr. to talk to you, but it's another issue. I just hope he nows what he is doing, cause I'm warried sick.
Petar is feeling very well, he is in a good mood, eat and drink, not in an any pain, except yestarday morning few times he was complaining for headaches, mild I supose, not persistent. I'm afraid of comma during night, although nurses wake him up every hour I supose, couse I'm not in a hospital during night (don't ask).
If somebody has similar expirience, or heard for something like that, PLEASE answer!

Dobrodošla (Welcome) Ive!
I do not have any experience with shunts myself so I cannot answer your questions, but I am glad that you asked it as there are many people on this site who either have shunts themselves or have kids with shunts. I hope that Petar is feeling better soon! I can only imagine how worried you must be and will be praying for the best for you both.

I also wanted to say that Croatia and the people of your country have a special place in my heart! I spent a summer there in 2006 (working with kids and families with special needs) and miss both the people and the country! (I was in Osijek and Fužine). I hope to come back one day in the future. Where are you from? Unfortunately my Croatian in general is pretty bad, but I can sing a bunch of kids songs in your language. :)

Wishing you many blessings.
Laku noć! (Good Night!)

Hello Ive
Welcome! :happy065:

One of my school friends had a shunt that no longer worked, they didn't remove it as it was not bothering him. His hydrocephalus had simply stopped.

I had HC when I was born but it stopped by itself in a few days so I never got a shunt.

I dont know if this helps any, but our baby had to have her shunt removed for about a week. They did replace it with an external shunt though. (a tube that came out of her head and drained into a container) She was only 2 weeks old at the time. It was very scarry!! We couldnt hold her because the tube had to be at a certain level or it wouldnt work. They were able to put a new shunt in after about 6 days.

Thanks for answers....
We are home since yesterday, Patar is the same, great! I'm not even waking him up during night cause he is rolling eventually.
Before his implantation at age of 1y and 3 months, he was not having signs of high ICP, but his head was 54 cm already, and NS said that we (parents) have to decide for operation.
It strange that NS decided not to take out an implat if there is no longer need for it. Petar's shunt was working properly, and his dr took it out, 1. reason was his ventricle has to fill with CSF before he put him a new shunt (he didn't do that other thing - tie shunt, 'cause of suspicion of latex allergy or another sensitivisation on shunt meterial) , but he mention that if he wouldn't have symptoms of hydrocephalus, he maybe stay "shunt-free" (something trigger this posibility at NS). He went on CT friday, monday, and one more tomorow. Monday he went to eyes fundus exam for ICP check, too.
Lifeisgood, I am glad you love people&places here in Croatia, anyway I feel little awkward about it.
