Has anyone heard about this?

Clearing The Bowels

Fecal incontinence-loss of the regular control of bowels-occurs due to a congenital defect called Spina Biffida Occulta, which is triggered by the deficiency of folloic acid in pregnant women.

Symptoms

1.4-5 hours to clear bowel
2.Acute abdominal pain
3.Patient feels bloated all the time
4.Constant complaints of incompelete evacuation

Cost

Rs. 3 Lakh

First of its kind surgery performed by AIIMS doctors in India. So far close to 10 such surgeries have been done worldwide.

Treatment

Sacral Nerve Stimulation (SNS). It's a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows for direct electrical stimulation of the sacral nerves S3, which are known to be connected with a majority of colonic functions

Step1

Two electrodes are inserted just above the hip into sacral nerve S3

Step 2

Electodes are externally stimulated one by one using a machine. Depending on the response, the best responding electrode is left in the patients body and connected to an excternal stimullator

Step 3

Bowel movements and the effect of stimulation is studied for a week

Step 4

If it shows good response, the electrode is permanently connected to a small stimulator, implanted in the hip

Step 5

Patient is given a wireless regulator through which he controls colon movements.

No I have never heard of that, I don't know what to think. I guess there's some practicalities there. I'm thinking wireless regulator!
Everything is going wireless, it has problems. A fellow was caught sitting outside another fellows house useing the first fellows computer with his own wireless computer.

Can you imagine your wireless regulator to operate bowel movements being set off anywhere any time by someone elses wireless regulator, it could be disastrous!! LOL
I'm sure they're working on it.
It wouldn't be for me, man and machines, foriegn bodies, what is it electro magnetics, radio waves, spooky stuff.

We are Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. :dance2:

Havn't heard of it either - do you have a link to more information?

What pace maker is to heart, a neuro-stimulator is to colon. Doctors at All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have implanted a small neuro-stimulator in 30-year-old who was suffering from chronic constipation due to a congenital defect spina bifida occulta.

I don't have any links. This is done in Delhi. I read in the News paper, so, I thought of posting here to find out whether you all know about it. I also got this thought what if somebody fidgets with it? World wide 10 such cases are done. If a person finds relief from the pain then may be something good. After all Brains are God's gift. Whatever is done for the betterment of a human being is always good. Afterall God's supereme creation is 'man'.

Is there a name for the procedure? Or the doctor who is primarily doing the procedure? Any study being done? I'd like to follow the info.

Resistance is futile..... Good one Dodger:sign0020:

What can I say - I'm a Trekkie (just a "Lite" though - not obsessed)

I thought of messing with the phrase a bit - "Your ass will be stimulated" but thought maybe that image would be just a bit too :puke:

Nolda I have a question - The article you quoted says the cost is Rs. 3 lakh.
I know Rs means Rupees but what is "lakh"?

bcain, I'll surely post, when I ger further any information about this surgery.
Now-a-days we are given lots of inputs about Spina Bifida and the variant complications of the same.

I think "your ass will be stimulated" is funny!!!

I just wonder how stimulating the colon that doesn't have proper innervation would work. The pacemaker for the heart resets the pulsing of already properly innervated muscle. If this works somehow for bowel, what about bladder. Probably still reaching for the stars on this one, but who knows.
