It's been a while since I posted but we have had a really busy summer. Anyway, Lily has a new physical therapist who has been the greatest thing since sliced bread for her, and he is working on new strength, balance, and muscle training techniques, he said walking is a strong possibility at this point, but that she will need HKAFOs. So I was wondering if anyone had had them, or thier child had had them, and what they were like. "In the past Lily has had KAFOs and they were such a pain to deal with getting on and off and all of that, so I was wondering what the HKAFOs would be like. Thanks in advance.

Hi! My daughter, Gabi, had HKAFO's when she was little. She started with AFO's, then moved to HKAFO's, and then ended up with KAFO's. Her HKAFO's were made with a hard band around the hip with attached outside metal rods that were attached to AFO's. It was tricky getting pants to fit over them. I will look for pictures tomorrow and post them. She was sooooo cute. How old is your daughter?

She just turned 6 in June. She would only be wearing them during PT for now, until we see how she is going to progress. I would love pics, thank you!

Thought I would add to this..Kaiya just got her new HKAFO's today :) We were even able to pick a pattern. There are more pics on my profile but here are a few. I couldn't find pics of what they looked like online so thought I would share incase anyone else wants to know too :) She loves them already..just being able to play on the table is a big deal for her! We were told if she straightens up at her hips (tends to bend down at the hips when she stands) that we would go to KAFO's. It is amazing seeing her standing for the first time and so straight :) I just know she is determined and we are so proud of our baby girl :)

Ooohh, she is so cute! Our pt wants us to talk with the ortho about getting the HKAFO's and a reverse walker. I was wondering what they looked like. It looks like she is a pro at standing already.

Thanks all! Makennasmom, Kaiya hyperextends at the knee so we were concerned about that and could not start her standing program with out the brace to preserve her legs...as soon as she started pulling up on things we told her ortho and he set us up with the physcal medicine and rehab doc and she wrote the Rx for the braces :)
