Hello!
Gabi woke up this morning with a fever of 103.2 F.
Our family has had a bug going around for a few weeks now and everyone else has had a low grade temp of 100-101 F.
Her normal body temp is 99.4 F.
Does anyone else experience a higher than average body temp and when sick, the body temp spikes really high?
She has had a temp of 105.6 F in the doctors office with a cold before.
I've heard this could be a chiari related thing.

I'm not sure how a fever could be a symptom of Chiari.. it's a sign of infection though. Hopefully it's just a bug and she will feel better soon!

I have the opposite problem -- my normal body temp is 97 degrees, so at 99 I have a temp but docs usually disregard it as within normal range for an adult. Luckily, I almost never get sick, so it is rarely an issue! (Knock on wood)

I have the same problem. Mine usually runs 96-97. Smoop, issues regulating body temp can be a symptom of chiari.

Oops.. my bad. I had no idea that was a Chiari issue. I'm going to have to do some research on that. Interesting!

arnold chiari malformation is when the back of the brain pushes on the spinal cord and causes symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, swallowing problems, sleep apnea, and many other problems. Most kids with spina bifida have it, but aren't told they have it until symptoms arise. Decompression surgery is the only thing to try and fix it right now. It however, isn't curable and many need more then one surgery. I started having symptoms at the age of 16. I however, have not had surgery as of yet. I am 25 now. I do massage therapy which helps the symptoms stay away for at least 2 weeks at a time. Hope I helped.

It's just scary that Gabi can have the same "bug" as the rest of the family, yet her temp is so much higher. I do worry about a seizure from too high of a temp. She woke up at 5am Saturday with a 103.2 fever. Once when we were at the pediatritians office for a cold, they checked her temp and it was 105.6. They were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. It was scary.

My second daughter runs a higher than normal body temp and when she's sick it's not uncommon for her to hit 103+. She's hit 105 on several occasions and 107+ twice, with random childhood illnesses. We watch her and recognize that she just runs hotter. She has since birth. We watch that she doesn't get confused or delirious and we give her something once she hits 103.5 so we aren't interrupting her bodies own defenses but also not risking frying her brain. :S
Now, that's not to say there may not be something more going on with Gabi. If it's not her normal high I'd take her in. How's she feeling now?

Hello!
Her fever is gone. She is just really stuffy now. But, you're right about keeping an eye on her. I will do that.
Thank you,
Bronwyn
